Richard Perry — Director

Richard Perry

Richard is the leader of the business and property law team at Johnston Lawrence. He was admitted to the bar in 1970 and after working in London has been in a private practice in Wellington. Richard joined Johnston Lawrence in 1993.

Property transactions are a major focus for Richard, who acts for a number of property and retail organisations which have significant property or lease portfolios.

He is experienced in business and personal law, and offers particular expertise in commercial property and business acquisitions and company law, computer contracts, and structuring of business and personal family trusts.

For a number of years Richard served as a district law society councilor and chaired the Wellington District Law Society's Property Law Committee. He was also a member of the New Zealand Law Society Trust Audit Board and a member of the working party on succession law reform.

Why a Lawyer?

I saw law as an opportunity to have a satisfying career while helping both to extricate people from difficulties and to protect and build their interests and their property.

Satisfying achievements?

I get satisfaction from steering complex commercial transactions to finality - but I wouldn't want to rank any above the others; every transaction is important to the client involved, and I get as much pleasure from more modest transactions where I know the client has been well served, and is happy, grateful, or relieved!

Hurricanes to win this year?

They are an exciting team to follow because they are so unpredictable. One of the strongest Super 14 squads this year - so I'll say yes - so long as I don't have to put money on it!
