How we charge

Like many things in life, lawyers and legal services seem to cost a lot. One of the most common gripes people have about lawyers is their lack of accessibility and how much they cost. But we're not your average lawyers.

We’re probably never going to be the cheapest lawyers around but we’re thorough, we know what we’re doing, and we’re very experienced. When you come to us with a problem, we’ll look at all the different angles.  If we see something that may be important, we’ll tell you. We’ll do our very best to give you value for money.

At Johnston Lawrence, our aim is to provide you with an efficient, high quality service at a reasonable cost. When first scoping a project, we will meet with you to discuss your requirements, determine what you are wanting to achieve and how you would like us to help you. We will then give you an estimate of the cost of the work. The estimate is not a quotation.

We generally charge fees based on the time taken to complete the work and any other relevant factors specified by the New Zealand Law Society, including for example:

  • The urgency or complexity of the work;
  • The skill, specialised knowledge and responsibility involved;
  • The importance of the matter to you and the results achieved;
  • Whether the fee is fixed or conditional;
  • The costs of running our practice

The hourly rates of our solicitors vary depending on the skill, experience and type of work involved. Our hourly rates vary from $250.00 per hour for a solicitor up to $425.00 per hour for a partner, exclusive of GST. We also charge for office expenses such as photocopying and toll calls, and third party costs such as Court filing fees.

We will tell you what the hourly rates of the solicitor or other persons allocated to your matter are once we know what the work involves and who will be responsible for your matter. We will tell you this when we write to you to provide you with an estimate for the work.

We will charge for all additional work carried out if:

  • You ask us to carry out further work or otherwise change your instructions;
  • The amount of work or scope of the task changes as a result of matters unknown to us at the time of the estimate;
  • The time taken to carry out the work increases for reasons beyond our control.

If the cost of the work is likely to exceed the estimate, we will advise you of the reasons.
